Be soothed to sleep by the sound of the waves in Greece
The rugged mountain peninsula of Mani is usually skipped by the many tourists that flock to Greece every year. They’re definitely missing out because this glorious historic hotel is a hidden gem.
Located in a complex of golden stone buildings dating back to the 1870s, Kyrimai Hotel offers an elegant escape next to the brilliant blue waters of the Mediterranean. In fact, if it was any closer to the sea, your feet would get wet!
The hotel’s 18 rooms offer the perfect blend of rustic décor and modern comforts, and are filled with artefacts reminding guests of the building’s past life. Don’t forget to indulge in the award-winning cuisine served in the converted warehouse – historically used to store Maniot goods ready to trade with other parts of Greece – or on the unique waterfront terrace.
Feel like a royal in Lisbon’s medieval castle village
High on a hilltop overlooking Lisbon is São Jorge Castle, a historic fortress dating back thousands of years. Within the walls of the complex, you’ll find winding cobbled streets, traditional whitewashed houses and Solar Do Castelo, the only hotel in the old medieval castle village.
Housed in a beautiful 18th century building built on the site of the former palace kitchens, this historic hotel is perfect for a romantic trip to Lisbon. Its 20 rooms are individually decorated in keeping with the building’s history. Stone walls and floors give the hotel a rustic feel and carefully picked antiques remind us of its storied past.
Make sure to check out the elegant courtyard around which the hotel is centered. As well as admiring the typical Portuguese azulejo tiles, you’ll hopefully get to see the magnificent peacocks who strut around like they own the place.
Be swept off your feet in Bohemia
The Czech Republic is home to numerous castle hotels, but few combine history, modern comforts and spectacular architecture as well as Zamek Liblice.
Located an hour north of Prague, the castle hotel is housed in an iconic baroque palace dating back to the late 17th century. With elegant décor and antique furnishings, the building itself feels like a work of art.
It’s also home to a conference center, a spa and a charming traditional restaurant. Whatever the reason for your visit, you’ll fall in love with this romantic historic hotel.
Sleep in a castle where Dante once stayed
But don’t be put off by the historic writer’s words, Castello di Gargonza is a Tuscan paradise. Housed in a number of small buildings within the 13th century walled village is a unique historic hotel.
From check in at the medieval tower to breakfast in the old olive press room, the hotel harnesses the individual charm of the castle’s original structure. The 22 suites and 8 apartments, named after famous figures who once stayed there, feature authentic dark wood beams and whitewashed stone walls.
Located less than an hour’s drive from Siena, Gargonza may be small but has plenty to offer. To complete your trip, the hotel organizes cooking courses, truffle hunting and Vespa tours of the enchanting Chianti countryside, amongst much more. Sign us up!
Relax and unwind in one of the oldest palaces on the Adriatic Coast
It may be newly renovated as a 5-star hotel, but the building itself is one of the oldest palaces on the Adriatic Coast, having been built in 1467. Located on the Mediterranean island of Brač, Puteus Palace Heritage Hotel is surrounded by the impossibly clear turquoise sea and the red-roofed limestone houses that are so typical of Croatia.
As well as 15 luxurious rooms and suites, the hotel has a secret garden with a beautiful terrace and a pool with a view of the enchanting town of Pučišća. Can you imagine a more enchanting place to stay in Croatia?
What’s more, the food here is a definite highlight. Indulge your tastebuds with the mouth-watering flavors of Croatia in the stylish restaurant hidden in the palace cellar.
Hide away in an ancient castle surrounded by a moat
What better place to escape for a break than to a castle with an actual moat to keep out the stresses of modern life? Dating back to the 13th century, Landgoed Sterkenburg is one of many impressive historic buildings and castles in the Utrecht region.
Surrounded by meadows, woods and orchards providing fruit for the kitchen, the hotel is the ideal place for a rural getaway. Stroll around the grounds, swim in the pond or lose yourself amongst the delightful antiques that complete the castle’s carefully curated décor.
With high ceilings and tall windows, its light and airy rooms really allow you to embrace the surrounding countryside. Plus, they’re each named after birds – and a turtle – which inhabit the estate. Total immersion in the Dutch countryside!
Embrace the past in a Schloss worthy of an Empress
Located on the shore of Lake Constance at the foot of the Alps, Schloss Wartegg was formerly home to Zita, the last empress of Austria. And you know what they say… if it’s good enough for an empress, it’s good enough for us!
Restored in the mid 1990s after decades of abandonment, the castle is proudly the first organic historic hotel in eastern Switzerland. The 25 luxurious rooms, all decorated in inviting neutrals, all offer spectacular views either over the lake or the landscaped English gardens.
A beautiful garden restaurant uses traditional organic farming and slow food methods to serve exquisite food that’s as good for the earth as it is for your tastebuds. A highlight of this impressive hotel is undoubtedly the spa, home to an iconic turquoise pool built in 1928. What better place to relax on your Swiss break?
Escape to a fairytale world in southern Norway
From a popular retreat for European royalty to a resort for German soldiers in World War II, it’s fair to say that the Dalen Hotel has experienced its fair share of history. Nevertheless, it has remained of the best-preserved hotels of its kind.
Housed in a vast wooden building in the unique Norwegian “dragon style” of architecture, it has been carefully restored to respect the original hotel as much as possible. The impressive stained-glass window is the very same as when it opened in 1894.
There’s plenty to do after you’ve enjoyed a good night’s sleep in one of the comfortable 49 rooms and suites. Hiking and biking in the mountains, cruising on the canals or taking a steam in the magnificent sauna inspired by the nature and history of the region. Truly a fairytale adventure in southern Norway.
