Dirk Hany’s profile has been on the rise in the last few years. He has received accolades from the acclaimed Spirited Awards and Mixology Bar Awards. He is also Switzerland’s Diageo World Class 2019 Champion.

Most recently, Dirk Hany’s Bar Am Wasser and the team has been shortlisted by the SWISS BAR AWARDS 2020 in the categories “Barkeeper of the year” and “Best Bar Team”.

As a child living in South Africa, Dirk Hany’s dream was always to work in the hospitality industry. In 1998, he moved to Switzerland in order to fulfil his initial goal of becoming a chef.

He graduated from a renowned hotel management school in Lucerne. In 2004, after living in France for a period of time, he discovered and fell in love with the art of mixing cocktails. He made a pledge to himself that one day he would open his own bar.

​In 2008, he received the “Bartender of the Year” award. Over the course of 4 years, he worked for Pernod Ricard as a Brand Ambassador. He also travelled extensively around the world to know more about bartending and worked for prestigious establishments to hone his craft and gain a reputation as a world-class bartender, a cocktail genius adept at creating marvellous concoctions and socializing with customers.

​In 2014, he accepted an offer to be the head of the renowned 5* Widder Hotel’s Bar. During his time there, the place received multiple awards, including the Best Bar in Switzerland, Best Bar Menu and Best Hotel Bar. It was also nominated twice as one of the Top 10 places for the Award of the Best International Hotel Bar.

In 2018, he opened the Bar am Wasser – a classic, high-end cocktail bar that pays tribute to all of the great bars Dirk Hany has visited in the past.
